The "Special" Relationship

It would be really refreshing if for once, when there is a change of President in the USA, the British media and our MPs would stop wetting themselves over the "special" relationship.

This "special" relationship was forged between Churchill and Roosevelt, in the heat of war, for the convenience of:

1 Roosevelt, who needed an excuse to lend military assets (for a price) to the UK and an excuse to bring the USA into the war and

2 Churchill, who needed America in the war.

Post war the relationship quickly unravelled when America wanted its debts paid, and the US supported Nasser in the Suez crisis.

The relationship only becomes "special" when there is a close bond between the President and PM (eg Reagan and Thatcher) or when it is in America's interests for it to be "special" (eg the Iraq war).

Therefore please stop wetting yourselves!

Welcome Mr President Elect

The Wee Election Across The Pond

Good luck to the good people of America, who vote for their new President today.

I cannot but help feel that had the Republicans chosen anyone other than Trump, they would win hands down. The same also applies to the Democrats, had they chosen anyone other than Clinton.

Good luck everyone!

High Court A50 Ruling Irrelevant

The ruling by the High Court that Parliament must vote to trigger Brexit is irrelevant:

1 Theresa May can invoke it by simply writing to Juncker et al. Once she has done that it cannot be uninvoked, even if parliament flays her alive.

2 The ruling simply covers the triggering of Brexit, the actual terms and conditions of Brexit remain in the hands of the government, not Parliament.

All in all the ruling is irrelevant, and nothing has changed!

Government To Appeal A50 Ruling

No surprises there then!

Remainers Stall Brexit

As per Law360 the High Court has ruled that the government needs parliamentary permission before it can kickstart the process to quit the European Union, in a landmark ruling which limits the scope of Prime Minister Theresa May’s executive powers.

The decision creates a new precedent in limiting the government’s executive power.

The case, brought by campaigners who argued that only Parliament has the right to start the exit, now threatens to stall the government’s plan to follow through on the nation’s vote to quit the EU in a June referendum.

All very well and good, for the Remainers, but this uncertainty will screw the entire country.

All Aboard The Titanic!

A50 Brexit Ruling at 10:00AM

The High Court will rule on Brexit and whether MPs should trigger Article 50 at 10:00AM today.

Heseltine The Dog Strangler

As per Guido Fawkes:
"‘I went to stroke him and he started biting me… If you have a dog that turns, you just cannot risk it. So I took Kim’s collar – a short of choker chain – and pulled it tight. Suddenly he went limp. I was devoted to Kim, but he’d obviously had some sort of mental breakdown.’"
Politicians getup to all sorts of shenanigans that produce some very lurid headlines. However, Heseltine strangling his mum's dog is really jumping the shark!
