Rishi's thin gruel has not pleased anyone (including the papers and Tory MPs)
- Fuel duty cut by 5p
- the threshold at which people start to pay NI will rise by £3,000 to £12,570
- basic rate of income tax to be cut from 20p to 19p by the end of this parliament
- VAT will be removed from green home renovations eg heat pumps/solar panels.
All this to cover the largest fall in living standards since the mid 50's!
The cost of the lockdowns and chaotic energy markets are coming home to roost.
As to whether more should have been done to help those facing a bleak financial year is open to debate. However, when the government proactively makes things worse (eg via green taxes and NI rises) it should be well and truly lambasted.
The fact is that the British state needs a massive overhaul viz:
- the civil service is next to useless, and is incapable of handling real time events and crises.
- the Met has reverted to the bad old days of the 70's wrt corruption and loss of trust of the public
- our energy policy is an utter shambles (a mishmash of wannabe green initiatives that will be paid for by the hapless taxpayers)
- education is chaotic and politicised in the classroom
- defence has been cut to the bone, at a time when it needs to be ramped up
- the NHS is a failed organisation not fit for purpose
- migration controls are non existent etc
Quite simply, the Tories are failing to act like Conservatives at a time when people desperately need them to act like Conservatives!
