Local Elections 2025: Labour’s Looming Defeat and Why Starmer Deserves It

On May 1, 2025, England’s local council and mayoral elections will expose the cracks in Sir Keir Starmer’s failing Labour government. With 1,641 council seats across 23 authorities and six mayoral races at stake, Labour is braced for a bruising. Polls predict a surge for Reform UK, potential Conservative losses, and a rebuke for Labour’s dismal economic policies, net zero obsession, and failure to stop illegal migration. Here’s why Starmer’s Labour deserves to get hammered.
Expected Results: Labour’s Slide, Reform’s Rise
Labour’s post-2024 election honeymoon is over. YouGov forecasts Labour losing all four combined authority mayoral races—Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, West of England, Greater Lincolnshire, and Hull and East Yorkshire—to Reform UK or independents. Reform, led by Nigel Farage, is tipped to win Greater Lincolnshire and Hull and East Yorkshire, with betting odds favouring their candidates Andrea Jenkyns and Luke Campbell. In Doncaster, Reform’s immigration-focused campaign could upset Labour’s grip.

Council races look grim for Labour too. Reform is projected to snag 400–450 seats, outpacing Labour’s expected 280. The Conservatives, defending 954 seats, may lose 475–525. The Runcorn and Helsby by-election, a former Labour stronghold, is now a toss-up with Reform, signalling eroding support. The Liberal Democrats and Greens are set to pick off votes from both major parties, but Reform’s momentum is the story of the day.
Why Labour Deserves a Kicking
Starmer’s Labour has squandered its mandate with policies that choke the economy, fetishise net zero, and ignore illegal migration. Voters are fed up, and here’s why they’re right to punish Labour.

1. Economic Incompetence
Labour’s economy is a mess. Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ tax hikes on businesses and farmers, plus cuts to pensioners’ winter fuel payments, have sparked fury. Growth is stagnant, inflation bites, and Labour’s debt-obsessed fiscal rules strangle investment. Industrial towns like Barnsley and Doncaster feel ignored, with no cost-of-living relief or regeneration in sight. Reform’s low-tax, pro-growth pitch is stealing Labour’s working-class base.

2. Net Zero Madness
Labour’s net zero dogma is economic suicide. The Grangemouth refinery closure, axing 430 jobs, epitomises Starmer’s reckless green agenda. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband’s policies alienate voters in fossil fuel regions like Doncaster, where Reform is gaining traction. Tony Blair calls net zero’s energy cuts “doomed”; voters agree, resenting sky-high bills and job losses for climate goals that feel elitist and impractical.

3. Illegal Migration Failure
Small boat crossings are a national flashpoint, and Labour’s response is pathetic. Starmer’s Border Security Command and EU talks are toothless, with record arrivals fuelling Reform’s “stop the boats” campaign. Scrapping the Rwanda scheme without a plan was spineless, and even Labour MPs like Graham Stringer demand tougher measures. In Runcorn and Helsby, immigration is driving voters to Reform, who promise deportations and border control.
A Justified Smackdown
Labour’s failures are self-inflicted. Starmer’s “Plan for Change” is a mirage, delivering higher taxes, job-killing green policies, and open borders. Pensioners, workers, and rural voters feel betrayed by a government out of touch with their struggles. Reform UK’s rise reflects a revolt against Labour’s incompetence and ideological blind spots.

Today’s elections will be a wake-up call. Labour’s projected losses signal a broader rejection of Starmer’s vision. Voters are ready to deliver a well-deserved thrashing for a government that’s failed on the economy, net zero, and migration. Starmer’s Labour isn’t just losing seats—it’s losing the plot.
