Four-Tier Keir's 2020 Christmas Eve oral lessons with Mellinger also, so we are now told, included Rachel Reeves. As I note yesterday, Mellinger's mother went down with Covid after being with her on Christmas Day.

Ironically five days after the voice coach meeting, a member of Reeves’ household also tested positive for Covid, aligning with the virus’ typical incubation period at the time. On 29 December 2020, Reeves tweeted:

“On Monday, a member of my household tested positive for Covid. Thankfully they are doing okay… I am not showing symptoms, but will now be working from home, including closing the Parliamentary debate on the UK’s trade deal with the EU. Please keep safe & follow public health advice.”

Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold

 

Boris has snookered the Cabinet Office and Sunak by handing over all his records wrt Covid to the Cabinet Office, and stating that he is quite happy for them to go to the inquiry.

He knows full well that the contents, and precedent of handing them over, will do more damage to Sunak than him.

As the saying goes "revenge is a dish best served cold", in this case Boris is serving a very large and very cold portion of this dish!

Boris and Rishi Fined

 

Boris and Rishi received FPNs yesterday for the one event that they didn't actually expect to be fined for.

Not least because the Times reported on it the day after it occurred in 2020, without anyone so much as batting an eyelid!

Given the "methodology" and snail's pace of the Met, it is entirely possible that this won't be the only fine levied on Boris.

Enjoy their knockabout fun, as they come with ever more bizarre and absurd rules for us to live by.

The show and their rules are not only fun, amusing, shocking and on every channel everyday; but they are also compulsory!

The Questions Hidden in Plain Sight

 

The media are fulminating with faux outrage over #PartyGate and the video of Allegra Strattton practising in the briefing room a year ago.

There is more than a stench of hypocrisy emanating from the "good people" of the outraged media, given that a good handful of them were also on the piss during lockdown last year as well (Kay Burley and Beth Rigby to name but two). 

It is also notable that the media operation to fan the flames of hysteria over the party/parties allegedly held by our political masters, was designed to ensure a few political heads would roll. Ironically the only head to roll, thusfar, is that of Allegra Stratton (one of the media's own, and an ex colleague of Peston)!

Media faux outrage aside, there are some key unanswered questions hiding in plain sight:

1 Who leaked the video?

2 Why did it take one year to leak?

3 Why are the media not releasing the names of the people who were at the party/non party (clue - were there were media people there?)? 

4 Stratton is an experienced journalist, and well versed in the dirty world of politics. Media professionals and politicians etc know to treat all cameras/microphones as live. She even said it was being recorded. Therefore why did she say what she said? She knew perfectly well it would eventually leak.

5 If the people who organised and attended these parties really thought that Covid was that dangerous, and that the restrictions that they had imposed on the rest of us (eg masks, social distancing, no mixing etc) were necessary to stop it, then they would have followed those rules themselves!

Starmer's Bad Luck

 

'Absolutely gutted': Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer tests positive for COVID-19.

Sir Keir will have to self-isolate for 10 days.

According to Sky, he carries out daily lateral flow tests but this is the first time he has tested positive (even though he has isolated 4 times before).

Hopefully he will recover without suffering any unpleasant symptoms.

CMA's Inaction Aids PCR Rip Off Farce

 

Hapless holidaymakers are being fleeced rotten by the extortionate fees charged by PCR test companies.

Sajid Javid wrote to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) last week to ask them to conduct a “rapid” review of the companies flogging these rip off tests.

Yesterday, the CMA wrote back to Javid telling him it would send him its findings in the next month.

Utterly pathetic!

Pay Cut Threat To Civil Service Home Workers

Emboldened by better than expected Covid figures, ministers are piling the pressure on civil servants to stop working from home and return to the office.

One nudge being bandied about is the threat of a pay cut for home workers. As to whether this actually happens remains to be seen.

Much to the relief of the travel industry, Boris and Number 10 have confirmed that there will be no public amber watchlist.

However, there is in fact a secret amber watchlist for government eyes only; as ministers need to know which countries are of concern in terms of case numbers and variants.

Given the recent polling, and newspaper headlines citing various minister show want travel restrictions loosened, it is likely that the traffic light system will not be further complicated.

Transport select committee Chair Huw Merriman told BBC Radio 4 Westminster Hour’s Alex Forsyth:

 “An amber watchlist will be viewed as a massive red flag which is likely to cause bookings to those countries on that watchlist to collapse.

In my view, we don’t need any more uncertainty, complexity, or anxiety for passengers, or this beleaguered sector. It just needs clarity. I would urge the government not to do anything with it.”

Labour's "Reckless" Policy

Labour, having first described Freedom Day as "reckless", has now described the changes in travel rules as "reckless".

This is now the official "policy" of Labour, to describe any change in Covid policy by the government as "reckless". 

Whilst not really a "policy" it does have the advantage that if used often enough during the course of the pandemic, it might (like a stopped clock) stand a chance of being right at some distant time in the future!

There's Going To Be a Fight!

 In the last few days before the parliamentary recess, Boris has decided to try to pick a fight.

With whom?

-nightclubs

-nightclub patrons

-Tory MPs

How?

-imposing Covid double jab passports on users of nightclubs/other large enclosed venues (pubs?) by the end of September

-funding the reforms to social care via a 1% rise in NI

Prognosis

The Covid passport is a large NUDGE to push the young (who have been tardy in taking up vaccines) to get vaccinated. On the assumption this works, it is almost guaranteed this policy will be abandoned before the end of September.

The rise in NI is a breach of the manifesto, and has enraged Tory MPs. However, rather perversely, the general public view it as less unpleasant than an increase in income tax (even though it is regressive).

Therefore, despite the Twitter meltdown and calls for anarchy over the above, it is probable the Boris has picked his fight in a rather thoughtful fashion and when push comes to shove the anger will vent itself harmlessly.

As Boris languishes in "isolation" in Chequers, he would do well to reflect on what could have been on this "Freedom Day".

He could have made a Churchillian speech outlining in honest terms:

1 The pandemic is still with us

2 We have to learn to live with it

3 There will be hospitalisations and deaths

4 The NHS can cope 

5 People should respect each others decisions eg wear/don't wear masks, distance/don't distance etc

6 We have to lift restrictions and return to living life

7 Double vaxxed won't need to isolate if pinged etc

Instead, for reasons that elude even his own party, both he and Rishi Sunak tried to evade the need to isolate then spent the rest of Sunday frantically denying that that was ever a serious decisions (even though the press release had already been issued).

Even now, he could face the country and admit his judgement failed him yesterday and as such will bring forward plans to al,low the double vaxxed to avoid isolation.

Sadly for the country, and for him, he won't!

The Fake Pro Mask/Pro Lockdown Campaign

 

Boris's decision to axe masks and lockdown restrictions on 19 July has angered a few people, who believe that we should be muzzled and locked down for the foreseeable future.

Aside from the usual suspects eg FAKE SAGE, the Guardian, Peston, Every Doctor Ltd etc; an unknown person/group has decided to mount a social media campaign decrying the end of lockdown and the abandonment of masks.

All very subtle, maybe, until you realise that their social media posts (although allegedly from different people) are word for word identical.

The question is, who is behind these posts?

As ever with those who claim to want to "protect" you, they ignore the concept of acceptable risk and living life to the full!

The Return of Common Sense Post Hancock

 

As per Gov.UK, today Boris will say:

"Thanks to the successful rollout of our vaccination program, we are progressing cautiously through our roadmap. Today we will set out how we can restore people’s freedoms when we reach step four.

But I must stress that the pandemic is not over and that cases will continue to rise over the coming weeks.

As we begin to learn to live with this virus, we must all continue to carefully manage the risks from COVID and exercise judgment when going about our lives.”

He will announce the end of mandatory masks and an end to social distancing.

Announcements re double jabbed being allowed to return from amber countries without having to quarantine will come later this week.

As I have noted before, the removal/resignation of Hancock has led to a remarkably positive change of mood and tone within the government. Hancock's affair, and being caught out, was the best thing that could have happened for the country!
