By-election ALERT!

Sunak Stops The Votes

As expected Labour won both Wellingborough (28% swing) and Kingwood (16% swing), Tory voters either stayed at home or voted for Reform.

Sunak says midterms are hard, he is missing the point that this is an election year.

As it stands, Labour will win a landslide General Election victory based on people's hatred of the Tories. However, in the months following Labour's win, the voters will realise that things will not actually get any better!

Tories Hold Uxbridge...Just

The Tories managed to hold Uxbridge by less than 500 votes last night, thanks to Khan's ludicrous ULEZ policy.

Suffice to say they lost the other two by-elections by very large swings.

By-Election Thursday

Three by-elections today when the voters of Selby & Ainsty, Somerton & Frome and Uxbridge & South Ruislip are predicted to give the Tories a drubbing.

Labour Hold West Lancashire

Unsurprisingly Labour have held West Lancashire. In the great scheme of things it will make very little difference, as we already have a Labour government!

Tories Lose Two By-elections and Party Chairman

Hot on the heels of the loss of the two by-elections, party chairman Oliver Dowden resigned at 05.30.

The Tories need to remember that whilst ditching Boris might provide a short term theoretical uptick, until they resort to Tory policies eg low taxes, abandon net zero etc they won't win the next election.

Bye-Election Day?

Two by-elections are being held today, in which the Tories are expected to lose.

By happenstance, Boris is out of the country for the next 8 days.

Shropshire Voters Give Boris Well Deserved Kicking

Unsurprisingly, the Tories lost North Shropshire in the wake of all the bollocks going on in Number 10.

LibDem Morgan won 17,957 votes — compared with 12,032 for the Conservatives’ Neil Shastri-Hurst, with Labour’s Ben Wood a distant third on 3,686. That’s an extraordinary 34 percent swing to the Lib Dems and the seventh-biggest by-election swing ever. Turnout was 46.2 percent, pretty decent for a December by-election.

Where does this leave Boris?

Well, politics is a funny old business.

However, Sir Ian Brady has oiled the wheels of the trolley further by allowing Tory MPs to submit letters of no confidence by email. Up until now they had to submit to Sir Graham personally by hand, which would have meant they couldn't hand them over until recess ends in January.

I wonder how many more dead cats Boris has up his sleeve?

Don't forget boys and girls, this by-election only came to pass because of a remarkably stupid blunder by Number 10!

Whither Batley and Spen?

The result in today's Batley and Spen by-election is not guaranteed for either the Tories or Labour, indeed it is not beyond the realms of possibility the George Galloway might win.

Should Labour lose, then the knives will be out for Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner, who is denying that she is mounting a leadership challenge, will mount a leadership challenge.

Labour Bats for Pakistan

For reasons that only Labour Party strategists know, they have decided to bat for Pakistan in the Batley and Spen by-election; whilst at the same time pissing off the world's largest democracy.

The Times of India reports:

"In a last-ditch attempt to woo ethnic minority votes in a bi .. LONDON: In a last-ditch attempt to woo ethnic minority votes in a bitterly contested byelection, a Labour candidate’s flyer features a picture of PM Narendra Modi shaking hands with UK PM Boris Johnson saying "‘Don’t risk a Tory MP who is not on your side".

There is a fierce battle for the seat of Batley and Spen, which was left vacant after Tracy Brabin became West Yorkshire mayor. Kim Leadbeater, sister of murdered former MP Jo Cox, is the Labour party’s candidate.

Next to the image, her flyer says:

"The risk of voting for anyone but Labour is clear".

Labour Friends of India has condemned the leaflet.

"It is unfortunate that the Labour party used a picture of the Prime Minister of India, the world’s largest democracy and one of the UK’s closest friends, from the G7 meeting in 2019, on its leaflet," it said.

"We ask the Labour party to withdraw the leaflet immediately and will also be writing to the leadership about this. The Labour party has a proud history with India."

NIMBYs Win Chesham and Amersham

The NIMBYs (who oppose HS2 and changes in planning rules) have voted for the Lib Dems in the Chesham and Amersham by-election.

It’s been Conservative since 1974, and had a Tory majority of  over 16,000.

The NIMBYs gave the LibDems a majority of 8028.

Also, rather remarkably, Labour lost its deposit as its vote fell from just over 7,000 to 622.

-Lib Dem: 56.7% (+30.4)

-Conservative: 35.5% (-19.9)

-Green: 3.9% (-1.6)

-Lab: 1.6% (-11.2)

The irony is the Ed Davey (leader of the LibDems has voted in favour of HS2).

The after-effects of this result will be that the Tories plans for changes in planning regulations will not happen.

Brecon By-election

A far better showing by the Tories than expected, given they let their disgraced former MP stand again for the seat (in the sure expectation he would lose).

Richmond Park Factoids

1 The Tories didn't field a candidate.

2 Goldsmith lost because people voted against him and his triggering of an unnecessary by-election.
