The Mood Has Improved Post Hancock

The mood in government towards Covid, and accepting that we have to live with it, has noticeably improved since Hancock left office.

Even Professor Whitty is relatively positive:

"Best news of the day: An ever-clearer picture is emerging of the seemingly broken link between COVID case numbers, hospitalizations and deaths, as optimism increases that the vaccine rollout can safely see restrictions lift next month. The Times’ Steve Swinford and Chris Smyth report that Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty told the Cabinet yesterday that he supported the planned reopening on July 19 — which will embolden ministers given Whitty wanted a stricter approach last time round. A Cabinet source tells the paper: “The view among the scientists was that we should get as much open this summer as possible before winter, which will be much more difficult. It was very encouraging.”

Jab saving lives: The Sun has a remarkable graphic illustrating just how successful the vaccine has been at breaking the link between cases and deaths. It shows that through the pandemic, a sharp rise in cases has led to a sharp rise in deaths. But since April, when the vaccine’s protection kicked in on the most vulnerable people, that link has appeared to break — with infections rising quickly again but deaths, so far, staying low."
